The use of Computers in Speech Pathology

The computer is an instrumental object in speech therapy. Computers emerged during the twentieth century, and they evolved rapidly in in size, speed, and functionality. These changes have been grouped into generations, hence the use of terms such as “first generation”, “second generation”, and “third generation computers. Today, computer technology has advanced so much that current efforts are geared towards developing and perfecting the use of artificial intelligence. This essay’s purpose is to examine how computers are being used in my field of study and career, which is speech pathology.


To begin with, computers are being widely used in speech therapy by both instructors to teach their students and also by the students themselves to practice in their own space and convenience. They have made speech therapy efficient, and have facilitated noticeable speech therapy development among individuals with speech-related problems. Today’s small, portable, and high-processing computers are the ideal objects for facilitating computer-based speech therapy, and this explained their growing recognition as both an instructional and diagnostics tool. They are an integral part of speech therapists’ efforts to enhance the efficiency of conventional visual and vocal instruments. These games and simulations have been proved to create speech-improvements faster compared to the traditional approach. Moreover, further improvements are being made to strengthen this aspect of speech therapy.

In conclusion, speech pathology recorded slow growth before the emergence of computers. However, with their introduction, speech pathology has been transformed into an exciting career. With the aid of the internet, speech therapists can create speech-therapy forums and online sites for speech-therapy games. This has led to the emergence of a professional community and subsequence ease of access to information about speech therapy. With the expected advancement in artificial intelligence for computers, speech-therapy will undoubtedly become more sophisticated and increasingly effective.
