Leadership and the Graduate Nursing Role


As the healthcare industry continues to undergo tremendous changes, one of them being increased emphasis on leadership. New strategies are being put forward in an attempt to promote leadership skills that can facilitate the reinvention and modification of the existing healthcare delivery system (Burkett 2016). This essay discusses findings of a quiz I took to determine my leadership qualities. The idea is to create an understanding of the kind of leader I am and how this fits into my beliefs about leadership. Lastly, I examine the leadership attributes that may be needed for graduate level nurses.


Quiz Results

This short, clear and multi-faceted quiz has revealed that my leadership style as democratic/participative. Under this style, individuals encourage the contribution and active participation by group members in daily activities and decision making. I prefer having followers run their final ideas through me as the leader. Upon analyzing their and adding my own contribution, I normally make the final decision which I believe to be beneficial to everyone and the organization at large.

Essentially, this this leadership style has its profound advantages and strong points, one of them being a feeling of ownership and responsibility by all group members. It motivates members strive to deliver the best performance in their respective roles. I prefer situations where each individual’s input is greatly specialized delivered in accordance with areas of knowledge. This way, precise decisions can be arrived at through a combination excellent analysis and empirical thinking.

Moreover, the findings have brought into view my deeply-held views about leadership. For instance, the choice of leadership styles can vary depending on the situation. A case in point is the authoritarian style, which can be utilized in contexts where the followers lack sufficient information and knowledge. On the other hand, the delegative style may be used in areas where group members hold more knowledge on specific ideas than their leader. For this reason, the transference of control to individual members becomes a necessity. After all, doing this is the most effective way of influencing them to make more accurate and relevant decisions. This method will allow for the leader to learn in new areas that they may have limited information or experience on without hindering the progress of the project.

This results of the quiz reflect my leadership beliefs, my procedures, and strategies fairly well. The nursing profession requires a great deal of organization and team work. The participatory and engaging leadership style allows for a smooth flow of tasks and the allocation of responsibilities at each level resulting in a complete and holistic system of operation (Edmonson, 2016). As a nursing leader, my aim as to reinforce my abilities as a democratic leader who is able to reinforce a sense of personal responsibility and motivation to other nurses. This style also serves to promote confidence and the growth of both communication and clinical skills and to execute them efficiently in day-to-day operations.

In addition, I would not mind getting recommendations on other leadership styles that could be coupled with the democratic style to make it even more effective. Each leadership strategy has its advantages and disadvantages, and while the democratic style is the most effective in today’s social structures, other leadership strategies also bear strong pillars that could be applied in different context to derive positive results. Therefore, it is important to analyze separate situations and particular conditions and determine the most appropriate actions to take under those circumstances.

Graduate-Level Leadership Attributes

Graduate level nurses are required to demonstrate strong personal and leadership qualities such as communication, vision, confidence, cultural competence and diligence. These qualities enable them to thrive in four domains which include professional nursing, clinical skills, health policy and systems (Manning, 2016). Communication is important at the managerial as well as the clinical level. For instance, proper communication with group members and fellow graduate nurses facilitates exchange of ideas and instructions in a clear and straight-forward manner (Schneider, 2016). On a clinical level, communication and cultural competence go hand in hand to ensure that the nurse-patient relationship is rendered productive through focus on respect and the attainment of optimal health outcomes despite cultural disparities. Therefore, graduate-level nurses need to apply their experiences through interactions with diverse people in their management and service while observing communication patterns and body language.

As a graduate level nurse, I have developed confidence and extensive knowledge in the nursing sector with a keen interest on its rapid evolution. In this light, I have understood and learned to put great value on strengthening core leadership attributes. For instance, I always strive to obtain education and relevant knowledge from all platforms within the nursing sector. This move is bound to boost my skill levels and decision making ability as a leader, thereby further strengthening my followers’ confidence in my leadership qualities.


As a leader, I always forge towards productive listening and accurate communication with colleagues while placing great emphasis on ensuring that effective communication and understanding of tasks are achieved. Patience and respect are important factors that affect the quality of communication patterns in horizontal and vertical capacities. Social awareness is also essential in promoting social health and welfare within the entire healthcare system.

Moreover, time-management is a strong personal and leadership virtue that I strongly believe in. In the nursing profession, life and health are contingent on proper time management in operational functions which include careful planning, organization, and scheduling of outlined goals. As a leader, I normally prefer arranging these goals in order of priority, ease of execution, and specificity.

Meanwhile, one of the biggest challenges I continue to face as a graduate-level nurse is the establishment of an internal culture that is modelled around service delivery. Many nurses tend to project a dehumanizing approach towards their patients instead of adopting a personalized and interactive approach in their care delivery. To address this problem, I will continue to dedicate more time to the development of strategies and the acquisition of more knowledge on how to develop a service-oriented culture in nursing.


Decision making is a core component of nursing management and leadership. It forms the foundational focus of one’s leadership style in graduate nursing roles. Therefore, as Burkett (2016) points out, “understanding the complexity and intensity of decision making is extremely important and imperative alongside organizing human dimensions that are inseparable from the decision making process”. As a democratic leader, I intend to use critical thinking and creativity in order to contribute immensely to effective decision making in all graduate-level nursing roles.
