Writing Strategies
Writing is a long, daunting process that requires great physical and mental effort. Quality and successful pieces of writing are the results of immense research, organization, time management, and extreme focus. Writing strategies are aimed at bringing into focus deliberate efforts to craft a compelling argument arising from an in-depth analysis of research facts and findings (Sharples 1999). Without them, it is impossible to streamline the writing process to come up with high-quality content. Prewriting and planning constitute the most crucial writing strategy. The other important strategy in writing is audience analysis.
Firstly, prewriting and planning form a foundational writing strategy that is applied in virtually all types of writing. According to Simpsons (2004, p. 86), planning strategies vary depending on the individual, audience, and writing project. For example, academic, journal or informative writing tasks follow an outline structure that is used to simplify research and further lay down ideas. Similarly, prose writing in most cases involves extreme planning on themes, plot, literary devices and characterization. It is only in rare situations that some prose writers will prefer to work through free and unstructured approaches that involve minimal pre-planning. Otherwise, prewriting and planning are crucial aspects of the writing process that involve preparing both mentally and physically for the task (Sharples, 1999, p. 7). They enable a writer to set time limits and writing goals in addition to obtaining a measure of progress in projects.
On the same note, audience analysis is an encompassing writing strategy that greatly contributes to the effectiveness of both technical and creative aspects of writing (Smith, 2005). Every writer should carry out a deep analysis of the primary and secondary audience while still remaining authentic and aligned with the initial direction of the writing. This will also facilitate proper research and proper choice of writing styles, themes and language that is appropriate for the intended audience. A point of focus should be the pursuit of success in terms of fulfilling the expectations of both the writer and the audience (Creswell, 2014). Accordingly, the literary style used tend to vary depending on the targeted audience. The same case applies when it comes to themes and ideas.
Overall, prewriting and planning as well as audience analysis are the two most crucial writing strategies. They pave the way for purposeful writing that is deliberate and functional rather than uncategorized and disjointed. The objective of using these strategies is not just to take complete control of the writing and production process, but also come up with texts that are relevant for the targeted audiences.
