Leadership for Board of Directors Strategic Planning

Assignment 9

Leadership for Board of Directors Strategic Planning

For this assignment, assume you are charged with working with a hypothetical board of directors for a hypothetical health care organization. The organization is a not-for-profit community outpatient clinic. Members of the board should be from several walks of life, professions, ethnicities, cultures, and disciplines. The organization has formed recently as a result of a grant, and it needs to develop its mission and vision. Board members each have differing viewpoints about whether health care consumers still should be referred to as patients, as is the traditional philosophy, or if they should be identified as health care consumers, who should be included in their own care plan of treatment delivery. You must develop a mission/vision strategic planning agenda and lead the activity to reach a consensus on delivering care with a consumer-driven, team-centered health care delivery philosophy. Analyze what you will recommend to the board about transforming to this philosophy as part of the proposal for the grant funding.

This assignment has two parts.

Part 1

Create a PowerPoint deck for a narrative PowerPoint presentation to facilitate mission/vision and strategic planning efforts at the board meeting.

In your PowerPoint deck, include the following:

  • An agenda for the mission and vision development and strategic planning at the board meeting.
    • Background on the differing philosophies of referring to consumers as patients or as health care consumers.
    • Your recommendation (supported by citations from peer-reviewed literature) for a strategic vision for the organization and your reasons for recommending it.
    • Steps to guide the board through the strategic planning process.

Part 2

Write a separate, short paper in which you summarize how you will lead the mission and vision development effort at the board meeting. In your summary:

  • Analyze how you will use communication methods to make sure all board members feel heard and included.
    • Analyze how you will apply concepts of emotional intelligence in conducting the meeting.
    • Explain how you will apply leadership competencies in conducting the meeting.
    • Explain how you will build consensus and cultivate creativity in the meeting.

The process of strategic planning is vital since it helps in the determination of the future of an organization. It is therefore important that a well thought out process is followed to allow for maximum participation of the members. As a leader of the mission and vision development for the not-for-profit community clinic, I will incorporate excellent communication skills, concepts of emotional development, and leadership competencies while conducting the board meeting. I will also ensure that I build consensus and cultivate an environment of creativity amongst the members. It will ensure active participation and development of vision and mission that reflect the goals and objectives of the organization.

Communication Methods

Implementation of the right communication methods in the facilitation of the board meeting will be important in the development of the mission and vision for the organization. I will ensure that I foster an environment of transparency and open communication. Every member will be given an opportunity to articulate their views without any interference. I will encourage all the members to practice active listening. Whenever, one of the members is offering their view or suggestion during the meeting, they need to be considered as the most important person at that time (Goetsch & Davis, 2014). As such, the other members will desist from interrupting them, talking alongside them, or devaluing their remarks. The rules of the meeting will require that anyone who needs clarification of a point should seek it from the speaker respectively. In case a point is not clear, I will paraphrase it for the audience. All speakers must be allowed to complete their thoughts before a rebuttal is issued.

I will encourage all the members to have respect for each other’s views. Even if they do not agree with a point that has been made by a member, they have to respect it and avoid making any derogative remarks. A member that thinks an idea will not work should diplomatically elaborate why they think the point is unsuitable, and then offer an alternative idea.

I will also make it clear to all members on the importance of being clear, concise, and direct. Most meetings are considered boring and long because members get engaged in wasteful communication. I will provide the agenda for every meeting in advance so that the board members get an opportunity to prepare for the meetings. It will help in making their communication clear and to the point.

Application of Emotional Intelligence

Success in leadership is based on a person’s ability to have a sound situational awareness (Dye & Garman, 2015). Leading a team require that a person understands how to manage their emotions when conducting a meeting. Having the ability to control one’s emotions allows them to make decisions that are well considered. In order to enable the meeting to go on effectively, I will practice self-regulation. Keeping the team moving requires that I take care of any disruptive emotions so that I can adapt to changing circumstances of the meeting. I will also encourage the other members to be disciplined and in control of their emotions throughout the meetings. Staying calm and positive will allow me to communicate more effectively when leading the board meetings.

I will practice empathy and compassion. In order to better understand another member’s point of view, I will place myself in their place. As a leader of the meeting, this will allow me to relate well with their points. It will also allow me to offer intelligent input to all the points that are put across by the directors. It will also be easy for me to paraphrase the points and present them to other members in a way that they are able to easily understand.

The success of the meeting will also be dependent on my ability to effectively manage the relationship between the members. I will ensure that all the members are free of any distractions that may inhibit their ability to make deep connections with the points expressed by members in the meeting. Proper and effective communication will allow me to manage the relationships in the group and move it to the desired direction. Through effective communication, I will clear out any misunderstanding within the group that has the potential to lead to bitterness, frustrations, or confusion.

Application of Leadership Competencies

It is important for leaders to effectively apply their competencies. There are various leadership competencies that can be applied in the board meeting in order to make more effective. In managing the strategic plan meeting, I will need to demonstrate leadership competencies that include ethics and integrity. I will clearly communicate the objectives of the meeting to the directors so that they understand the importance of the meeting. Demonstrating ethics and integrity will include establishing the rules of the meeting so that there is a good relationship between the members of the board in the meeting (Galvin et al., 2014). Application of integrity in the meeting will include ensuring that everybody respects the opinion of the other members. It will also include refining the points so that reasonable points are included in the draft document for the strategic planning. It will also include the development of adaptability. As a leader, I will be required to engage in active listening of all the points made in the meeting.

In leading others, I will need to maintain effective communication so that each contribution that is made in the meeting is recorded effectively. The meeting involves board members that are drawn from various backgrounds. It is, therefore, important for me as a leader to demonstrate value to diversity and differences. No member should be discriminated on the basis of their culture or background. Every point made should be accorded respect regardless of the contributor.

Building Consensus and Cultivating Creativity

It is important to build consensus for meetings so that they can move on effectively. Building consensus will involve encouraging collaboration between the board members (Kocsis, Vreede, & Briggs, 2015). They will be encouraged to work cooperatively as opposed to competing with one another. I will also be involved in mediation process in the meeting. It will involve helping the board members to deal with disagreements amongst them. I will also provide the members of the meeting with a conflict assessment. It will help them deal with disagreements that may arise in the course of the meeting.

Active participation in the meeting will help in developing the organization vision and mission. The process of developing a strategic plan will involve the development of proper communication methods where everyone will be given a chance to articulate their views. It will also involve the application of emotional intelligence will include self-regulation, empathy, and compassion. It will also include the application of leadership competencies. Finally, the success of the meeting will be dependent on consensus building and creative thinking.
