Economics, Politics and Gender

Cultures differ in unique ways that are determined by the strategies that members of a community use to handle and solve challenges. It is imperative to consider how culture plays a role in the economic setup and how anthropologists evaluate this phenomenon. In essence, one may argue that whenever a culture develops considerable economic value than the government and citizens alike begin to have an interest in it.

To begin with, a culture’ economic system determines the political influence of that country. The economic system used may depict to a certain degree the way political rights are manifested. Mostly, a culture that embraces socialism is associated with a totalitarian type governance whereby the state own virtually all the country’s wealth and the people do not have any control over the state resources. In this case, the resources of the state are unevenly distributed and therefore people have no right to make any decision regarding governance because resources are centrally owned. Nevertheless, such an economic structure may society to acquire many benefits, for example, medical care and education opportunities.

On the other hand, capitalism helps people to exercise their democratic rights. A culture that has this type of economic system mainly fosters democracy because control over economic opportunity is in the hands of individuals. Unfortunately, a culture that is governed by a democratic government also tends to have its fair share of challenges. For example, it has to be careful to train its people on how to be responsible in the use of resources provided. Unless the government exerts some form of control, these democratic rights can easily be misused.

Meanwhile, gender plays a crucial role in the economic life of a society. Both women and men have crucial responsibilities to undertake in every society, and gender-based task allocation is primarily defined by culture and reinforced by the prevailing politics-driven economic system. One dominant political aspect today is manifested through empowerment programs as part of efforts to encourage women to be more assertive in the economic world. Nevertheless, this may not be the case in all the cultures. Some do not advocate for women’s engagement in formal work; rather they require them to stay at home and take care of children. In such situations, the economy is not fully exploited due to gender-based cultural constraints. For any economy to thrive, both men and women should take part.
