Fundamentals of Effective Communication in the Workplace
Effective communication is a crucial requirement for any business that seeks to achieve the goal of increased productivity (Kirkman & Turk, 2002). There are many situations where I experienced effective communication in a business context, leading to increased productivity. In one example, I worked as a supply and purchasing manager in a large retail store. During the first days of employment in this retail store, I used to expect every employee to do what was expected of him or her without any communication exchange. In other words, I used to communicate fewer times than necessary with employees regarding their work, routines, duties, and responsibilities. This meant that information was not being shared freely between myself and members of my team. For this reason, the level of productivity decreased considerably.
After one month, founder of the retail store visited the workplace and told me to see him later that day. When I went to see him, he expressed his reservations about my poor communication skills. He informed me that I needed to share information more freely with my subordinates in order to create an environment where productivity could be increased. I responded to this challenge positively by taking the issue of effective communication more seriously. My efforts were not fruitless because from that day, I instinctively became conscious of my every communication with employees. I quickly realized that I had made false assumptions regarding the employees’ awareness regarding what needed to be done at any time at the workplace.
I perceived the communication I was engaging in to be effective for three reasons. The first reason is that it enabled me to understand the employees better. Secondly, it enabled me to gain confidence about the need to share information with others in the workplace. Thirdly, I noted that those employees who communicated more often became victims of conflicts with their colleagues and supervisors less often than those who communicated less often. The retail business benefited immensely from the communication. Workers acquired skills on how to communicate with customers, it became easier for challenges of problem-solving to be resolved amicably, and the retail store started attracting greater satisfaction and loyalty among its growing list of satisfied customers
